European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
