Intense Winds Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents urged to avoid going out as powerful gusts lash the country.

Severe gales attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 households lacking electricity and led officials to cancel more than 100 flights, as reported by local media.

These gusts are impacting the complete southern region and southern parts of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have issued uncommon severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas encompassing these major districts.

Locals have been advised to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for more utility disruptions.

Extensive Impact and Crisis Response

The power cut appears to be affecting homes predominantly in the southern region, while authorities say that energy was being restored progressively.

Local media have stated that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being struck by a wooden fragment at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Air travel in and out of the metropolis have been cancelled as a result of the winds, while various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have issued a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Work Stoppages Alongside Harsh Conditions

The powerful gales on Thursday coincide with tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "significant labor action", requesting better pay and working conditions.

But the intense climate has compelled them to change various scheduled activities, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or called off.

Comparable winds are affecting the nearby nation, causing a period of extreme heat to the country's outback.

Agencies have announced flame prohibitions for fear of forest fires.
