Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
