Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
