In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
